
Why Your Infrared Heaters Actually Die (And How We Fix It)
Here’s a little secret about infrared heaters: it’s rarely the heating element that gives out first. Usually, the real trouble starts right where the lead wire plugs into the quartz tube. In high-wattage setups, that little junction takes a massive beating. Heat just crawls up the wire, slowly baking the insulation until it gets brittle and cracks. Once that happens? You’ve got a short circuit on your hands. Simple as that.
The problem with “cheap” seals
If you’ve ever bought a budget heater, you’ve probably seen them use basic glues or loose gaskets. They just can’t keep up. Think about it: these heaters go from room temperature to hundreds of degrees in a heartbeat. Everything expands and contracts. Those cheap seals eventually gap, letting in oxygen and moisture. That’s when the internal connections start to rust and oxidize, and eventually, the lead just burns out. We do things differently. We use OEM-grade sealing—think high-temp ceramic-to-metal seals or specialized silicone potting. The key is that these materials move and breathe at the same rate as the quartz. The seal stays tight, no matter how many times you flip the switch.
Keeping things safe
A good seal isn’t just about keeping dust out; it’s about managing “heat soak.” We use fiberglass-braided silicone or PTFE for our lead wires because they can handle the heat. But even the best wire will fail if the seal lets the tube’s internal heat bleed directly into the wire core. Just a heads-up: make sure your wiring harness is actually rated for the lamp’s peak temperature. If you’re using standard PVC wire, it’s going to melt. It doesn’t matter how good our seal is if the rest of your wiring can’t take the heat.
One thing to watch out for
There is a trade-off. Because our seals are so sturdy, the point where the wire exits is pretty rigid. **Don’t force a sharp bend right at the seal.**If you kink the wire during installation, you might stress the seal and create a leak. Just give the wire a few inches of slack so it has room to move as it heats up. Your heater will thank you for it.
