
Why we put our bathroom lamps through a “steam torture test”
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, wild temperature swings, and humidity that just doesn’t quit. If a heating lamp isn’t built for that kind of chaos, the seals give out, the filament pops, and the whole thing dies way too soon. We aren’t interested in guessing if a lamp will last. That’s why we use damp-heat aging tests.
Why these things actually break
Most infrared lamps are just quartz tubes and tungsten filaments. Simple, right? But here’s the catch: in a steamy bathroom, moisture loves to sneak into the tiny gap between the glass tube and the metal end caps. The second that water vapor hits a glowing hot filament, it triggers a reaction that creates “hot spots.” Then—pop—the tube ruptures. To stop that from happening, we basically build a time machine. We throw our lamps into high-humidity chambers and blast them with power. It simulates years of shower steam in just a few weeks. If a seal is going to leak, we want it to happen in our lab, not in your customer’s ceiling.
The trade-offs (and the cost of doing it right)
We use specialized sealants and alloys that don’t rust or corrode. Does it make the parts more expensive? Yeah, it does. But it stops that nasty “blackening” of the contacts you see on those cheap imports. One thing to keep in mind: higher wattage means more heat. And more heat means the metal and glass expand and shrink more aggressively. It puts a lot of pressure on the seals. We’ve spent a lot of time tweaking the tolerances on our R7s and Sk15 mounts to handle that stress. Just a heads-up though—don’t over-tighten them during installation. If you crank them down too hard, you might actually crack the quartz.
How we know it works
While the lamps are sweating it out in the chamber, we’re watching the leakage current and resistance. It’s pretty straightforward. If a lamp finishes the test without flickering or leaking electricity into the chassis, it passes. It all comes down to the seal. Keep the moisture out, and the lamp stays lit.
