
Dealing with Voltage Headaches in IR Heating
Trying to keep infrared heating consistent across different global plants is a total nightmare. You’ve got one machine in North America built for 110V, and then you look at your site in Europe or Asia and they’re running on 480V or 575V. It’s a risky game. If the lamp voltage doesn’t line up perfectly with the grid, you’re looking at one of two things: you either fry the filament the second you flip the switch, or you never actually get the parts hot enough to do the job.
The Nitty-Gritty of Voltage
We don’t just “tweak” these lamps; we build them from the ground up to handle those specific voltage swings. Think of a 575V lamp as its own beast. It needs a completely different filament winding and material density just to keep it from burning out prematurely. When you jump up to higher voltages like 480V, you don’t need as much current (amperage) to hit your heat targets. That’s a win for your control panels because you can use thinner wiring. But heads up—that extra voltage puts a lot more pressure on the insulation of the lamp leads.
Reflectors and the Heat Soak
The reflector is basically there to push every single photon back onto your workpiece. We pair our custom-voltage lamps with high-reflectivity housings so none of that precious heat leaks out the back. But here’s the thing: when you cram high wattage into a small housing, it getshot. Really hot. If you’re running those 575V high-density tubes, make sure your cooling fans or water jackets are actually beefy enough to move that air. If they aren’t, you’ll end up warping the reflector, and then your heat distribution goes right out the window.
Making it Work on the Shop Floor
We make these as drop-in replacements. Whether you need a weird length or a specific lead wire, the goal is for you to wire it up and get back to work. By matching the voltage exactly to your local transformer, you can toss those bulky external step-down converters in the trash. Those things are notorious for dying the moment they hit a high-heat environment. It’s just simpler this way.
